Redmi 12C (“earth”)

Flashing a custom ROM or a stock firmware on a MediaTek (MTK) device like the POCO C55 (“earth”) is a common procedure for various reasons, such as unbricking a device, upgrading or downgrading the MIUI version, or installing a custom ROM. However, it’s a process that requires caution and technical knowledge.

Here is a general guide to the process, along with the necessary tools and files.

Disclaimer: Flashing your device can be risky.1 It can void your warranty, and if done incorrectly, it can brick your device. Proceed at your own risk and ensure you have a full backup of your data.

Prerequisites

  1. Unlocked Bootloader: For most flashing scenarios, especially when installing custom ROMs or TWRP recovery, you need to unlock the bootloader. This is a crucial step for any Xiaomi device. The process involves using the official Xiaomi Mi Unlock Tool and often requires a waiting period.
  2. MTK VCOM Drivers: Your computer needs to recognize your phone in a special pre-boot state called “Preloader” or “BROM” mode. This requires installing the correct MediaTek USB VCOM drivers.
  3. Flashing Tool: A dedicated flashing tool is necessary to send the firmware files to your device.
    • SP Flash Tool (Smartphone Flash Tool): This is the most common and widely used tool for flashing MediaTek devices. It is a free, cross-platform tool that allows you to flash firmware, custom recoveries, and even unbrick a hard-bricked device.2
    • MiFlash Tool: This is Xiaomi’s official flashing tool.3 It’s used for flashing official MIUI Fastboot ROMs.4
    • Professional Tools (e.g., Hydra Tool, Chimera Tool, UnlockTool): These are paid, professional tools used by repair shops. They offer advanced features and often bypass Xiaomi’s security checks, but are not necessary for a standard user.
  4. Firmware/ROM File: You need the firmware file you want to flash.
    • Stock ROM (Fastboot ROM): This is the official MIUI firmware from Xiaomi. It comes in a .tgz format and is designed to be flashed using the MiFlash Tool.
    • Custom ROM: A third-party Android build, usually in a .zip file, that requires a custom recovery like TWRP to be flashed.
  5. A PC/Laptop: A computer is required for the flashing process.
  6. USB Cable: Use a good quality, original USB cable to avoid connection issues during the flashing process.

Common Flashing Methods

1. Flashing with MiFlash Tool (for Official Fastboot ROM)

This is the recommended method for flashing a stock MIUI ROM. It requires an unlocked bootloader.

Steps:

  1. Download the Fastboot ROM: Go to the official Xiaomi firmware download website or a reliable source and download the Fastboot ROM for the POCO C55 (earth). The file will be in a .tgz format.
  2. Extract the ROM: Extract the downloaded .tgz file using a tool like 7-Zip or WinRAR.5 You will get a folder containing the firmware files and a flash_all.bat script.
  3. Install MiFlash Tool: Download and install the Xiaomi MiFlash Tool on your PC.
  4. Install Drivers: Ensure you have the necessary ADB, Fastboot, and Qualcomm/MTK drivers installed on your PC.
  5. Boot into Fastboot Mode:
    • Power off your phone.
    • Press and hold the Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously until you see the Fastboot logo (a bunny repairing an Android robot).
    • Connect the phone to your PC via a USB cable.
  6. Flash the ROM:
    • Open MiFlash Tool.
    • Click on Select and navigate to the extracted Fastboot ROM folder.
    • Click Refresh to see your connected device in the tool.
    • At the bottom of the MiFlash window, choose the flashing option:
      • Clean all: Wipes all data and keeps the bootloader unlocked.6
      • Save user data: Flashes the ROM without erasing your data (not always recommended).
      • Clean all and lock: Wipes all data and re-locks the bootloader.7 Be careful with this option, as flashing a ROM from a different region and then locking the bootloader can brick your device.
    • Click Flash to start the process.
  7. Reboot: Once the flashing is complete, the tool will show a “Success” message. Your phone will reboot automatically, and the first boot will take a while.

2. Flashing with SP Flash Tool (for Unbricking and advanced flashing)

This method is more complex and is often used for unbricking a device, even if the bootloader is locked or the device is in a hard-bricked state (often referred to as BROM mode).

Steps:

  1. Download and install SP Flash Tool: Download the latest version of SP Flash Tool.
  2. Download the Firmware: Download the Scatter-based firmware for your device. This firmware is often available from different sources and comes with a scatter file.
  3. Install MTK VCOM Drivers: This is a crucial step. Install the drivers so your PC can detect the phone in BROM mode.
  4. Launch SP Flash Tool: Run flash_tool.exe as administrator.
  5. Load the Scatter File: In the Download tab, click on Choose next to “Scatter-loading File” and select the scatter file from your extracted firmware folder (MTxxxx_Android_scatter.txt).8
  6. Select Download Only or Firmware Upgrade:
    • Download Only: This flashes the selected partitions. It’s safer if you know what you are doing.
    • Firmware Upgrade: This flashes all partitions and is often used for full ROM upgrades.
  7. Connect the Phone in BROM Mode:
    • Power off your phone.
    • Press the Download button in the SP Flash Tool.
    • Connect the phone to the PC while holding both Volume Up and Volume Down buttons. The tool should detect the phone and the flashing process will begin.
  8. Wait for Completion: A green circle will appear in the tool once the flashing is complete.
  9. Disconnect and Reboot: Disconnect the phone and power it on.

Important Notes:

  • Auth file: Modern MediaTek devices from Xiaomi have a “SLA” (Security Lock Agent) and require an authorized Xiaomi account or a paid flashing tool to bypass the security check when flashing in BROM mode.
  • NVRAM/NVData: Be very careful when flashing. Flashing without the proper NVRAM or NVData partition can lead to issues with your IMEI, network, and SIM card recognition. Always back up these partitions if possible.
  • Source of Firmware: Always download firmware from reliable sources to avoid malware or corrupted files.
